| This web page is maintained by some of Lacey Phillabaum's friends. It is intended to provide up-to-date information for other friends and family, publish some of Lacey's writings, provide information about her case and more. This site will be updated when she's moved or anything of interest happens in her case (last updated October 1, 2008). The unattributed content found here are her friends' words, not hers.
Lacey pled guilty to arson for her role in the May 2001 arson at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture. The sentencing range in the plea agreement called for a 3-5 year sentence.
Lacey was fortunate to have very capable court-appointed counsel in the Seattle area, Gil Levy. Gil has done Lacey many good turns and we're relieved that she's represented by very able, intelligent and kind counsel.
On August 28, 2008, Lacey was sentenced to 36 months imprisonment. She reported to FDC Philadelphia on November 3, 2008. Lacey had previously self-reported before her sentencing and served about 14 months between January 2006 and March 2007. We anticipate that, subtracting "good time" and halfway house, Lacey has about 14 months left to serve.

| At the moment, Lacey's friends are concentrating on writing her some nice letters, taking up some small collections for her commissary account (most of the money goes to pay for phone calls), and sending her books to read (see Lacey's wish list here).
We'd all very much appreciate it if you'd make a small cash donation to the commissary account (click here) and write her a letter. If you are wondering whether she'd like to get a letter from you, the answer is yes.
Lacey also hopes you'll think of her if you have any big copy-editing projects that are looming. Because of delays in the mail room, she can't turn things around quickly, but she really enjoys feeling productive and keeping her skills sharp. Write to her about it.
Writing letters to federal prisoners is simple and easy. Please review guidelines here.

| Some brief biographical information: Lacey was born in 1975 in Yakima and was raised in Spokane. She attended the University of Oregon from 1993-1996 and graduated cum laude with a degree in art history. At the time of the first arrests in this case, she was working as a journalist in the Washington D.C. area. You can read some of Lacey's writing here. Lacey hopes to continue writing and pursue a master's degree in prison, if possible.
Lacey's involvement in the arson at the UW, for most of us that know her, was very out of step with the rest of her life. Lacey has told us that she admitted her role in the UW arson because it was both the practical and the right thing to do. She has expressed enormous regret for the intense impact that her misguided actions had on the community, the researchers and the students of the horticulture center.
If you would like to read Lacey's apology to the court and the victims, you can read it here (this link will be functioning soon). There has been intense scrutiny of this case and the people involved, and a lot of misinformation about what Lacey has or hasn't done. As outspoken as she is, it's been difficult for her to watch erroneous information be repeated.
Lacey (and we) have been very grateful to everyone who has shown compassion in this difficult situation and hasn't leapt to judgement based on uninformed speculation and rumor mongering. If you have any questions about Lacey's actions or role in this case, please feel free to contact us, or better yet, write Lacey a letter. Lacey responds to mail as best she can.
Any and all inquiries, including media inquiries, can be directed to info@laceyalice.org.
Thanks for visiting. Come back soon!
